Chapter 24

Abi’s heartbeat thundered in her ears as she sprinted along the landing, running as fast as she could, running for her life. Her head spun, struggling to process what she’d just witnessed. Despite working behind the scenes in Hollywood for a relatively short time, she’d already seen a lot of sordid shit, but nothing like this.

She could still see an image of the room imprinted on her mind’s eye. The menacing stare of the woman in black with dark hair and thick bangs, and the sheer contempt from the other woman with pale skin and sunken cheeks – the one now chasing her. She’d been holding a syringe, poised to stab it into the young woman huddled in the corner. Jefferson’s mistress, no doubt. Poor bitch. She only looked to be in her early twenties, not much younger than Abi.

But it was the image of her boss she couldn’t shake from her mind as she raced towards the stairwell. Jefferson, sprawled in his underwear with white foam leaking from his mouth. Dead. Or if not dead, definitely on his way out. The same as his girlfriend. The same as Abi, too, if she didn’t get away.

Because witness was the operative word here. Abi was young and relatively inexperienced, but she knew how these things worked. The fact she’d seen the women’s faces made her a problem for them.

A problem that had to be eliminated.

Reaching the end of the landing she practically threw herself down the stairs, taking them two at a time, a rush of adrenaline fuelling her. She leapt the last few steps, stumbling as she hit the hard concrete below.

Get up. Get moving.

Scrambling to her feet she sprinted for the exit, the echo of footsteps above spurring her on. Her pursuer was close behind.

Who the hell were these people?

Clearly, Jefferson had pissed someone off. Her mind raced. Who had a motive, and more importantly who had the means and motivation to have the poor bastard killed? Jefferson wasn’t a good boss or a good man, but he was a damn good cinematographer and he didn’t deserve to die. Did he?

Regardless, it didn’t matter now. Someone had sent those women to kill him, and Abi had disturbed their plans. There was no way they’d let her just walk away.

Reaching the entrance she slammed her open palm against the door release button.

Come on. Open up, damn you!

The lock mechanism clicked and Abi flung herself at the door, bursting out onto the street. The cool night air hit her face as she stumbled out of the building, her heart pounding in her chest. She looked around frantically, shivering in her sweat-soaked shirt. The street was empty, the buildings dark. She needed to find help and fast. The adrenaline was beginning to wane, leaving a gnawing fear in its place.

Think, Abi. Think.

She sprinted away from the building towards downtown, the voice in her head screaming at her to keep moving. Glancing back over her shoulder, she saw the woman was still chasing her.
